A shot of mangroves in El Salvador

El Salvador

Spanish Flag El Salvador espanol

El Salvador is a small country on the Pacific coast of Central America.

HALO has been operating here since 2017. Our focus is on securing and destroying weapons, and training local law enforcement in safely managing arms.

Situation in El Salvador

The brutal civil war in El Salvador during the 80s and early 90s, claimed the lives of over 75,000 people. Many more 'disappeared'. It left behind a dangerous legacy of guns that were imported during the conflict. This contributed to high levels of crime and violence.

Lack of opportunity, gang violence and high levels of extortion have historically put young people in El Salvador at risk, but providing them with meaningful employment can help them escape the cycle of violence.

The war is over but stability and security in El Salvador are an ongoing challenge.

HALO's work and impact in El Salvador

HALO has been working in El Salvador since 2017. We work with the military and police to strengthen their management of weapons and ammunition. We prevent firearms being diverted to organised crime and reduce the risk of unplanned explosions.

We deliver specialised courses in small arms and light weapons, ammunition handling and accounting, and explosive ordnance disposal. These courses equip local officials with the tools necessary to adopt best practices.

We also strive to ensure the meaningful participation of women and other minority groups in the security forces.

HALO projects

HALO is working on vital mangrove restoration project in the Jiquilisco Xiriualtique Biosphere Reserve in eastern El Salvador. We're also collaborating with Mangrove Action Project and community-based Asociación Mangle to improve living conditions. We're striving to build a system of economic, social, and environmental justice and gender equity.

In collaboration with vulnerable youths, the project employs 12 at-risk young people and trains them as community reforesters. We're creating mangrove nurseries and cultivating 10,000+ trees to replant in the area known as 'El Quemado'.
