On May 12th, Representatives Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA-6), Ami Bera (D-CA-6), Young Kim (R-CA-40), and Rich McCormick (R-GA-7), along with 133 of their colleagues, submitted a bipartisan letter to the House National Security, Department of State and Related Programs Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee encouraging support for humanitarian demining and weapons security programs.
This surpassed the amount of signatures on last year's letter, which closed with 129, and set a new record of support in the House!
The letter called for $271.703 million for the State Department’s Conventional Weapons Destruction (CWD) account, which funds State Department humanitarian demining and weapons security management programs in nearly 50 countries.
These programs address the security and humanitarian impacts of landmines, IEDs, and other explosive remnants of war and combat the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons systems. The requested funding includes $80 million for Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, which would be critical to supporting security, promoting positive U.S. leadership, strengthening diplomacy, and clearing U.S. legacy ordnance from the Vietnam war.
