International Mine Awareness Day 2026
A special message from Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk
Landmines still threaten millions of people around the world—long after the fighting ends.
They keep families from returning home. They stop farmers from growing food. They put children at risk every day.
But you can help make land safe again.
International Mine Awareness Day
April 4th is International Mine Awareness Day, a day to recognize the millions of people still living with landmines and the life-changing progress being made to remove them.
Every day, with support from people like you, these dangers are cleared—one field, one road, one village at a time. And when the land is made safe, life begins again.
A village coming back to life
Because of supporters like you, communities once trapped by fear are moving forward.
In Zalissia, a village in Ukraine’s Kyiv region, families were forced to flee after heavy fighting in 2022. Landmines and explosives made it too dangerous to return.
Today, that is changing.
With HALO deminers clearing the land, families are coming home. Roads are reopening. Fields can be farmed again. The village is returning to everyday life.
Ukrainian human rights lawyer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk visited Zalissia with HALO’s team. Hear her message about what this transformation means for families on the ground.
